I reviewed this book in 2004 or 2005....while being the Baptist, Business Coach and Insurance Host - Writer at another site.

Look Good...Feel Better. The class was sponsored by The American Cancer Society and the author's cancer clinic.

It promised to teach the author beauty techniques that would enhance her appearance and self-image so she could cope with "unpleasant side effects" of cancer treatment. About fifteen women attended. Some were already hairless, and others would be soon.

They practiced applying makeup and painting on fake eyebrows. They learned tricks for fooling people into thinking they still had eyelashes. They learned how to style their wigs and tips to keep them from falling off their heads. They walked out of the class with a bag of goodies...lotions and potions for dry skin, assorted cosmetics, and coupons for wig shops and beauty supplies.

One day about halfway through her chemo, she put on some perky workout clothes, applied all her makeup tricks, put on her cap with the hair fringe attached, and headed for the gym. After her walk, she stood in front of the large wall mirror in the locker room.

The beauty queen next to her with the perfectly toned body pulled off her cap and her long beautiful hair tumbled down onto her shoulders. The author was screaming inside.

At that moment, all the beauty tips, even knowing her situation was temporary, didn't matter. Maybe it was because people had always commented on her thick black hair. It was her "best feature." And cancer stole it from her. Maybe she didn't need the approval of others to feel good about herself. Maybe she didn't need to compare herself with others.

The next time you apply all your makeup tricks, know that your true beauty rests deep inside you. So start looking good and feeling better. In HIS eyes, you're a beauty queen (I Peter 3:3-4).

More than 260,000 women in the USA are diagonosed by breast cancer every year. This book is written by a five year survivor of the disease, an encouraging book.

The author leads the prayer for cure cancer ministry and serves as an intercessory/one-on-one mentor for women with breast cancer.

On August 18, 1999 the author life changed forever. She could face breast cancer on her own or, she could trust God.

Mary J. Nelson is the author of Grace for Each Hour - Comfort for Women Facing Breast Cancer. The author is the founder of Soterian, a healthcare communications consulting firm.
